REVIEW: Guy’s Girl by Emma Noyes

The boy who couldn’t love, and the girl who wouldn’t…

This is a beautifully written coming of age story that will have you riding the rollercoaster of emotions just like our MC Ginny. While very much a romance, with some swoony and also emotionally messy moments, at its core, this is a story about self forgiveness and healing from grief and trauma.

On one hand, we have Adrian Silvias, an up-and-coming stock broker, trying to escape the profound grief of losing his father at such a young age. On the other is Ginny Murphy, a guy’s girl dealing with her own trauma, hiding one very big secret. Both are unable to love. Yet as this emotionally raw story unfolds, we see these two confront their struggles in very realistic and honest ways, and as you get to know each of them, it is impossible not to root for them both individually, and together.

While this is a fictitious story, the emotional pain and anguish that accompanies Ginny’s eating disorders jumps off the page, as author Emma Noyes speaks from her own personal experiences. I have never felt the absolute terror and heartache that accompanies these disorders, both for the individual, and their loved ones – until I read this book.

I cannot recommend this story enough. Of note, the audio is fantastic. Brilliantly narrated by Lori Prince, each and everyone character came to life through her passionate narration. This is one book, and audio, I won’t soon forget.

Ginny Murphy is a total guy’s girl. She’s always found friendships with boys easier to form and keep drama-free – as long as they don’t fall for her, and she doesn’t fall for them. She and her best guy friends have stuck to that. But then she meets Adrian Silvas, the only one who’s ever made her crave more, and Ginny begins to question her own rules.

Piece by piece, Ginny and Adrian begin to fall into something intoxicating, something dangerous. Ginny threatens to destroy the belief Adrian’s held ever since witnessing his own mother’s heartbreak: that love isn’t worth the risk. For Ginny, the stakes could be even higher. Letting Adrian get close could mean exposing a secret she’s long protected: her disordered eating.

Ginny isn’t looking to be saved by someone. But maybe she and Adrian can help each other – if they don’t destroy each other first.

Heartfelt and evocative, Guy’s Girl is a powerful story about true love, self-love, and growing up.
